Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Last year, when we selected Orlando for our next XCA specialty, it seemed an ideal choice. A bargain in the off season, ideal Xolo weather, and plenty of tourist attractions and convenient to reach by air or ground transportation. Needless to say, no one  suspected that 05 would usher in a record breaking round of hurricanes for the southeast.

The last round of storms proceeded along the eastern seaboard Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 24-25, perfectly coinciding with the dates that most exhibitors commenced traveling to travel to the show. Getting there turned out the be the low point of the weekend. Despite lost luggage, delayed flights traffic and unexpected detours, everyone agreed that it was worth the trip.. As southern FL suffered another round of storm damage and blackouts, Orlando welcomed us with perfect weather.

Because our club is small and our breed is rare, opportunities to visit and see dogs are limited. But they are vital to the Xolo’s future. Six shows in two days provided  abundant opportunity for everyone to learn, compare and lay plans for their breeding program. And that is what specialties are for.

Show coordinator and FL resident Judie Smith found a perfect location and a great deal for our show. The Seralago is not a deluxe tourist hotel but for our purposes it was ideal. Dog friendly, with ground floor rooms , plenty of dog walking space. Along with a great show rate, the hotel threw in free use of their tennis courts for our shows.

The 19th annual XCA specialty pulled a record turn out, including several new members, and observer judges. Of course the main attraction was the Xolos. Several new Mex. imports were entered in the show as well as the  the first gen of puppies produced by  some of our recent champions.

The first show, sponsored by the SEXC, judged by  Ms. Leonora Riddle, the grand dame of rare breed judges, and definitely one of the most popular Xolo judges. True to form, she  did her own thing and thoroughly enjoyed her assignment.

PM show

Evening match show

After a break to walk and feed dogs, and grab a bite to eat, it was back to the tennis courts for the SEXC sponsored hairless breed match, judged by UK Crested and Sphynx breeder Angela Rushbrook. Because our Wed. evening wine and cheese party was cancelled because so many exhibitors were still stranded at various airports. We decided to combine the events.

Friday’s AM show was sponsored by the  Southern Alberta Xolo Association. Renowned for their fabulous trophies, they were true to form.
