Our Club’s Official Position on Ugly Dog Contests
Since 1986, the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America has been
dedicated to the protection, improvement and recognition of this breed in
America. To further those goals, we have consistently worked to educate the
public regarding responsible dog care and valid breeding practices. And we
enthusiastically endorse events that recognize and reward quality Xolos. XCA
members are encouraged to exhibit their dogs at legitimate dog shows. However,
we condemn the promotion of poor quality specimens, neglectful care and genetic
health disorders consistently showcased in “ugly dog contests”.
The majority of dogs entered in these events are hairless,
representing several recognized breeds as well as crossbreeds. Many of them are
former rescues or geriatric pets. A large portion of them suffer from physical
disabilities. Some of these conditions are extremely painful, avoidable and
indicative of long term irresponsible care such as periodontal disease, skin
infections and chronic ear infections. Others, like cataracts or tooth loss are
inevitably due to old age. Many of the drastic faults highlighted in these
contests, such as dwarfism and wry bites, are the result of faulty breeding.
Promoting or rewarding dogs afflicted with these regrettable conditions is
inconsistent with the purpose of our organization. Nor are these traits
representative of the well bred Xoloitzcuintli that XCA breeders are dedicated
to producing.
